Over the years, electric bicycles have undergone a remarkable transformation. Initially, they were heavy, cumbersome, costly, and had a limited battery life. However, the situation has since improved significantly. The latest ebikes are sleeker, more visually appealing, and more robust than ever before. You don’t have to be in top physical shape to use one, and they offer a fantastic way to enjoy the outdoors while also reducing traffic congestion and your carbon footprint. Additionally, ebikes are incredibly entertaining to ride, making them an excellent choice for leisure activities.

Best for Most People
Trek FX+ 2Electric bicycles are becoming increasingly popular and accessible, with almost every major bike manufacturer now offering an entry-level commuter e-bike. Among them, the Trek FX+ 2 stands out as the most affordable option currently available. Available in two versions – a step-over and a step-through – the step-through model is particularly light, weighing in at only 40 pounds. With a 250-watt hub motor, a 250-watt-hour battery, standard 9-speed Shimano shifters, hydraulic disc brakes, and fast road bike wheels, it handles like a versatile hybrid bike. Moreover, it comes with several additional features, including integrated lights, a bell, a rear rack, fenders, and a kickstand. All these features make the Trek FX+ 2 an excellent option for a 6-mile city commute at an unexpectedly affordable price. -

Cowboy 4 STThe Cowboy 4 ST is stylish, requires minimal maintenance, and is easy to assemble straight out of the box. However, the stem is equipped with a built-in quad lock system and wireless charging. With a compatible phone case (an insignificant additional expense), using Google Maps to navigate through town becomes simple and effortless.
You can also use your phone to keep track of the battery level and easily remove it from the frame for indoor charging. It’s relatively rare to find features such as a carbon belt drive and automatic lights at this price point. Unfortunately, the 4 ST’s rear hub motor only has a 250-watt power output, which may not be adequate for people living in hilly regions. Additionally, the bike can only be unlocked with the app.

Best for Uber
Ride1Up Cafe CruiserAt its price point, the Cruiser’s performance can’t match that of slightly pricier bikes. The Bafang motor is noisier, and the assistance it provides is less smooth and predictable. While a passenger kit is available, the rear rack can only support up to 150 pounds, so you’ll need to limit your passengers to those who are lighter. The Shimano shifters and hydraulic brakes are good features. A throttle is also recommended for maximum maneuverability, particularly on a bike this large with less-than-smooth acceleration.

Best Value
Propella 7-Speed (V4.0)If you’re not an ebike enthusiast, finding an affordable option can be a challenge, especially if you want a motor and a sturdy frame. Fortunately, Propella’s 7-speed model fits the bill. It’s the best budget-friendly bike we’ve tested and boasts reliable components such as a Samsung battery and Shimano disc brakes. It also comes with some impressive accessories, including a suspension seat. Another perk is that it’s shipped directly to your doorstep, which is convenient if you prefer to avoid a bike shop. However, as a direct-to-consumer bike, it’s worth noting that your local shop may encounter difficulties repairing it. Additionally, Propella updates their bikes every few months to keep them current.

Best General Use Bike
Specialized Turbo Tero X 4.0This iconic mountain bike has been revamped to become an electric ride that can handle any terrain, with its long and sturdy frame, big mullet-style wheels, custom full suspension, straight handlebars, and commuter accessories like fenders, lights, and a rack.
The 250-watt motor and 730-watt/hour battery may not seem as powerful or long-lasting as you’d expect, but with Specialized’s Mission Control app and 12-gear shifters, you can adjust the assistance level according to your needs and preferences, taking into account factors such as battery conservation and target heart rate. The display even shows you when the battery is optimized for pedaling at a fit cyclist’s 80-100 revolutions per minute (rpm), as opposed to a more casual 60 rpm. However, at nearly 58 pounds, this bike is not lightweight, and the $4,500 price tag may be steep for some.

The Best Electric Mountain
Canyon Spectral:ON CFRThis one is designed for a fun ride, boasting a full-carbon frame with front and rear suspension and a playful 29-inch front wheel and a smaller 27.5-inch back wheel. You have the option of choosing between a 720- or a 900-watt-hour battery, with the smaller frame size only offering the former. The 720-Wh battery can take you for approximately 51 miles. Pearson has ridden it on challenging terrains, covering 15 to 25 miles each time, with fast and enjoyable experiences that only drained half of the battery. But, of course, it’s important to test ride any electric mountain bike before attempting to use its electric assist on highly demanding trails.
